Company History
After almost 150 years of pioneering exploration, expansion, diversification and innovation, Rio Tinto stands today as one of the world’s largest producers of a range of essential materials, and a major force driving human progress.
Rio Tinto Borates is a world leader in borates, with mines, processing plants, commercial and research facilities. Dampier Salt is one of the world’s largest producers of seaborne salt. Rio Tinto Iron & Titanium is an industry leader in high-grade titanium dioxide feedstocks.
The heart of Rio Tinto Borates' business is the open-pit mine in Boron, California, one of two world-class borate deposits on the planet. Company founders began mining borates in 1872. What began as an underground mine was transformed into an open pit mine in 1957.
